The Major Arcana are a suit of 22 cards. The Major Arcana (or Trumps, as they are sometimes called) consist of archetypal themes of human existence. These represent the most basic concerns and needs, as well as traits such as Strength, Temperance and Justice. Some are given astronomical names, such as The Star, The Sun and The Moon, while others are named after people who represent these qualities, such as The Empress, The Lovers and The Hanging Man. When the Major Arcana present in a reading, they are often given special weight because of their importance as an integral part of human nature. The Major Arcana are as follows:
